Before You Dig or Excavate

Before you start an excavation project, always call 811 (or 800-382-5544), the nationwide number for line locating.

Damage to any underground utility lines can create a potentially hazardous situation, not just buried power lines. When digging, Indiana Underground (Indiana811) suggests staying a minimum of 24 inches outside the markings. It is your responsibility to inform IUPPS at least two business days in advance before digging begins. They will notify the relevant line locating services to mark all underground utility lines with color coded paint and or flagging. Customer-owned service lines may or may not be marked and are the homeowner's responsibility.
